One of the suggestions that I discovered on how to take an upward shot of a building without distorting the perspective, was to use a bubble level mounted to your hot shoe. Both my Sony and Canon cameras have a level that you can view on the display but it is difficult to see especially if your camera is positioned low or very close to the ground. Even with a flip-out screen the hot shoe level made it a breeze to ensure I nailed level on every shot.
