My Top 3 Lenses: Pros & Cons by Brian Suman

www.briansuman.com (3).jpg

Have you ever heard of G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)? Well, you could say I have suffered from it at times however being fortunate enough, if there is such a thing with G.A.S., to have been able to acquire various lenses it has given a wide range of experience so I thought I would give you my top 3 lenses and the pros and cons.

Again, this is very subjective due to what I would typically shoot and my choice to use Canon and Sony systems.

My Lens List:

Canon 24-105mm, f4 (recently sold)

Canon 24-70mm, f2.8

Canon 70-200mm, f2.6

Canon 50mm, f1.8

Canon 35mm, f1.4

Canon 85mm, f1.2

Canon 100mm, f2.8

Sigma 12-24mm, f4

Sony 16-35mm, f4

My Top 3:

Canon 70-200mm, f2.8

Over the past couple of years this lens has become my go-to for portrait sessions, both studio and outdoors.

Pros: Tack sharp, fast for sports action, great compression especially for portraits.

Cons: Expensive, heavy

Sony 16-35mm, f4

Since I recently switched to using Sony, this is my go-to for wide angle shots and video recording.

Pros: Lightweight, incredibly sharp, reasonably priced

Cons: None at this time (believe it or not)

Canon 24-70mm, f2.8

If you need a solid lens for event photography or one that covers a good focal range this is the one you need in your tool bag.

Pros: Good focal range, light compared to other Canon lenses.

Cons: Expensive, not as sharp as other Canon glass on my list.

I would love to know what your top choices are for lenses so shoot me a comment below. If there is anything else with any of the lenses listed you would want more information on please let me know and I would be happy to elaborate.

With or without G.A.S., you can still bring your imagination to life.

My Word For 2018: Perseverance by Brian Suman

Perseverance.jpg

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” Martin Luther King Jr.

Each year, I choose a ‘word’ of the year so for 2018 my word was perseverance. I know that there is still some year left but I felt tugged to pen a few thoughts today on my year and my word.

This year has been so very different for me creatively. I chose at the end of last year to change my direction in photography which meant not focusing on genres that I previously had the last three years. This also meant that I may lose previous clients or say no to opportunity that would come my way but I felt tugged to change. I have been so very blessed with opportunities since beginning in photography but I felt like there was something more for me as a creator.

I had begun to feel limited and you could challenge me by saying that I didn’t have to stop growing what I had previously had accomplished and to that I would say no I didn’t but after prayer and meditating on it for some time I knew it was time.

I needed my creative expression to be bigger.

Funny thing though, I didn’t choose my word after I had made my big decision so it was though my spirit knew what was in store for 2018 and knew what I needed to hold me accountable.

‘Perseverance’ is a word I have now uttered to myself numerous times over the last 10 months. Even as I write this, I still feel lost but found in so many ways. I am still scared but comforted. But one thing is for certain, my word has been more powerful than I would have imagined it to be. It has helped hold me accountable and encouraged me. It has told me to push on when I wanted to give up.

It continues to tell me, “whatever you do you have to keep moving forward”.

Friends, I challenge you before the year ends to choose a word that can help you bring your imagination to life and make you do something that you have never done before. As simple as it seems, it works and it can be your game-changer for 2019.
